New Delhi: The AAP on Saturday criticised the BJP-led central government for not allocating space within the Rajghat complex in Delhi for the last rites of former prime minister Manmohan Singh and said that it “reflects poorly on India globally”. Singh was cremated at Nigambodh Ghat on Saturday in the presence of top dignitaries from India and abroad. He passed away on the night of December 26 at the age of 92. An order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Friday stated, “It has been decided by the Government that a state funeral will be accorded to Dr. Manmohan Singh. The funeral will take place at 11:45 am on 28th December 2024 at Nigambodh Ghat, New Delhi.” The AAP called on the BJP to clarify its stance and demanded an apology to Singh’s family and the Sikh community. “Manmohan Singh, a global icon and India’s only Sikh prime minister, was denied even 1,000 square yards of land for his cremation and memorial at Rajghat. Almost all former prime ministers were cremated there, but the BJP government refused this basic courtesy to Singh,” said AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal. AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh accused the BJP of disrespecting the Sikh community and questioned the rationale behind the decision. “This is not just an insult to PM Singh, but to the Sikh community and all Indians who value his contributions. The BJP’s mindset is exposed — they are unwilling to honor a man who served India with distinction for a decade,” Singh said. Highlighting the significance of Singh’s contributions, senior AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said, “His economic policies saved India during crises and propelled us forward. Yet, his funeral was relegated to Nigambodh Ghat, a decision that diminishes the dignity of his legacy.” AAP leaders argued that the denial of space at Rajghat sets a troubling precedent and reflects poorly on India globally. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to conduct the last rites of former PM Manmohan Singh at a place where a memorial can be built. The same day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, after a cabinet meeting, said the government would allocate space for the memorial and this had been communicated to Singh’s family and the Congress president.Mora’s contract extension will run through 2028 and will pay him $10 million through the remaining four years, with the opportunity to earn more in incentives. The 63-year-old coach is set to make $1.7 million next season, $1.9 million in 2026 and $2.3 and $2.4 million in 2027 and 2028, respectively. UConn then went out and thrashed North Carolina, 27-14, in a game that wasn’t as close as the score indicated. “I am forever grateful. I’m grateful to (athletic director) David (Benedict) and (school president) Radenka (Maric) and the Board of Trustees, but this is about what the (UConn players) did today,” Mora said when asked about the extension in the postgame press conference. In a statement released by UConn ahead of the game, Mora said: “I’d like to thank David Benedict, Radenka Maric and the University of Connecticut leadership for their trust in me and their commitment to our football program. When I first got here, I talked about where we wanted this program to go and we have shown great progress but we still have plenty of work to do. The commitment and dedication from the university and the athletic department has me excited about the future for our football team.” “Three years ago, I tasked Jim Mora with the challenge of leading our football team back to success and through his experience, energy and leadership he has done just that,” UConn athletic director David Benedict said in a statement. “He has taken our program to post season bowl games twice and just guided our team to one of the best seasons in UConn football history, building a momentum to keep this program moving forward. I look forward to his leadership of our football team in the years ahead.” Mora is coming off one of the most successful seasons in UConn football history, having led the team to an 8-4 record and an appearance in the Fenway Bowl. It’s the Huskies’ second bowl appearance in three years. UConn’s eight wins is the most for the program since 2010, and the Huskies had their first winning season since that year, too. A win Saturday would give UConn nine wins for just the third time in program history, with the last two such seasons coming in 2003 and 2007. UConn quarterbacks coach Brad Robbins is heading to Tulsa as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, according to a report from CBS Sports. Robbins was part of a coaching staff that helped the offense produce its most prolific attack since the 2009 season and fifth-most in program history (32.3 points per game). Robbins worked at FCS Tennessee Tech and Division II North Greenville before joining Jim Mora’s staff in spring 2023.

Thousands of Georgians formed a human chain in central Tbilisi on Saturday, in support of the country's European Union membership, marking second month of their daily pro-Europe rallies. Mass street protests gripped Georgia since November 28, when the ruling Georgian Dream party's increasingly authoritarian government said it will not seek the opening of EU accession talks until 2028. The protest came a day before a controversial inauguration of Georgian Dream loyalist Mikheil Kavelashvili as the county's new president, after his election was declared "illegitimate" by the current leader Salome Zurabishvili and the pro-Western opposition. On Saturday afternoon, thousands of demonstrators, waving Georgian and EU flags, lined the Mtkvari River embankment and several bridges in the capital, Tbilisi, forming a kilometres-long human chain, seen by a reporter of the French news agency AFP. "I Want to Hold Your Hand," a hit song by the English rock band the Beatles, echoed from speakers mounted on a car as it drove along the human chain. Zurabishvili, at loggerheads with the ruling party, has joined the demonstrators at Tbilisi's Dry Bridge. Similar rallies were held in cities across Georgia, local media reported. On the Metekhi Bridge in the historic district of the city, protesters displayed a banner reading "Freedom for political prisoners." Read also:

Michael Bourn is no stranger to speed. A two-time All-Star, Bourn stole 341 bases throughout the course of his 11-year Major League Baseball career. However, it wasn’t his speed that was the focus on Thursday. Bourn participated in a Zoom call to help promote the Speedway Classic ‘25 coming up on Aug. 2, 2025, as the Atlanta Braves will battle the Cincinnati Reds at Bristol Motor Speedway. On the call, Bourn voiced his excitement to see modern speed threats like Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr. and Cincinnati’s Elly De La Cruz take center stage at a venue known for high-speeds. “I think those are two superstar-talented players,” he said. “Especially Elly De La Cruz, man, he’s just scratching the surface. Last year, he was able to come around and have 67 stolen bases and also had 105 runs scored. But I think he’s just scratching the surface. He just made his first All-Star Game last year. “I actually haven’t seen him play in person, so I will be attending that game. Being able to get there and see him play will be amazing.” While De La Cruz had a breakout year in 2024, Acuña missed much of the season with a torn ACL. But, in his last full season, the Braves right fielder broke out himself, winning his first National League MVP after hitting 41 homers and swiping 73 bags. One of the biggest reasons MLB is seeing the re-emergence of stolen bases is the set of rule changes implemented ahead of 2023. The league increased the size of the bases from 15 inches square to 18 inches square, limited the amount of pickoff attempts allowed by pitchers, and introduced the pitch timer. Bourn said that if that ruleset was in play during his career, which spanned from 2006-16, he would’ve been very aggressive in his steal attempts. “(I would’ve stolen) a maximum of 120 (in a season),” Bourn said. “I would’ve set the bar high. I think it just presents more offensive ways to get involved in the game. To me, the base-stealer actually has the advantage.” A two-time Gold Glove winner, Bourn played for the Braves from 2011-12 and again in 2015. During his first stint in Atlanta, he played for then-third base coach Brian Snitker. After spending time managing AAA-Gwinnett, Snitker then became the Braves’ skipper, where he will be entering his 10th season in the role. “It was fun being around him,” Bourn said. “As a third base coach, he did his role as a third base coach. Always got us prepared for things that we needed to get prepared for for the game. Was a little bit more laid-back – in the manager role you have to be a little more outspoken.” The ex-centerfielder added that much of the success the Braves have had in Snitker’s tenure has been due to the manager’s ability to build a good coaching staff. “At one point they had Ron Washington, Eric Young Sr., Walt Weiss, and Sal Fasano on one staff,” Bourn said. “They had very good baseball people and they had very good baseball knowledge around him. And that’s one thing good managers do: they hire good baseball people around them to help them along the way of a long season.” Bourn’s 2012 season with Atlanta was one of the best of his career, hitting for a .274 average and accruing 42 stolen bases. He finished 18th in MVP voting, the highest finish of his career as the Braves made the postseason. It was a run that ended short, though, as Atlanta lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2012 NL Wild Card Game, 6-3. The contest has gone down in infamy due to a controversial infield fly call from the eighth inning. Still, the campaign was one that Bourn remembers fondly. “I remember Chipper Jones’ last game, it was sold-out, no parking nowhere,” he said. “That was one moment where I was like, ‘Man, he’s a Braves legend.’ Also, clinching to go to the playoffs in 2012 even though we didn’t win a playoff game. Freddie Freeman hit a home run to clinch. To me, that was an amazing moment. We had a great team that year.” Stay Informed: Subscribe to Our Newsletter TodayZscaler Reports First Quarter Fiscal 2025 Financial Results

The royal family’s ‘brutal’ 2024 as the Windsors faced major health challengesDayle Haddon, an actor, activist and trailblazing former “Sports Illustrated” model who pushed back against age discrimination by reentering the industry as a widow, has died in a Pennsylvania home from what authorities believe was carbon monoxide poisoning. Authorities in Bucks County found Haddon, 76, dead in a second-floor bedroom Friday morning after emergency dispatchers were notified about a person unconscious at the Solebury Township home. A 76-year-old man police later identified as Walter J. Blucas of Erie was hospitalized in critical condition. Responders detected a high level of carbon monoxide in the property and township police said Saturday that investigators determined that “a faulty flue and exhaust pipe on a gas heating system caused the carbon monoxide leak.” Two medics were taken to a hospital for carbon monoxide exposure and a police officer was treated at the scene. As a model, Haddon appeared on the covers of Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Elle and Esquire in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as the 1973 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue. She also appeared in about two dozen films from the 1970s to 1990s, according to IMDb.com, including 1994’s “Bullets Over Broadway,” starring John Cusack. Haddon left modeling after giving birth to her daughter, Ryan, in the mid-1970s, but then had to reenter the workforce after her husband’s 1991 death. This time she found the modeling industry far less friendly: “They said to me, ‘At 38, you’re not viable,’” in 2003. Working a menial job at an advertising agency, Haddon began reaching out to cosmetic companies, telling them there was a growing market to sell beauty products to aging baby boomers. She eventually landed a contract with Clairol, followed by Estée Lauder and then L’Oreal, for which she promoted the company’s anti-aging products for more than a decade. She also hosted beauty segments for CBS’s “The Early Show.” “I kept modeling, but in a different way,” she told The Times, “I became a spokesperson for my age.” In 2008, Haddon founded WomenOne, an organization aimed at advancing educational opportunities for girls and women in marginalized communities, including Rwanda, Haiti and Jordan.’ Haddon was born in Toronto and began modeling as a teenager to pay for ballet classes — she began her career with the Canadian ballet company Les Grands Ballet Canadiens, . Haddon’s daughter, Ryan, said in a social media post that her mother was “everyone’s greatest champion. An inspiration to many.” “A pure heart. A rich inner life. Touching so many lives. A life well lived. Rest in Light, Mom,” she said. The Associated Press

New York State Expands Guidance for Employers to Notify Current and Former Workers of Potential 9/11 BenefitsEntergy’s stock rose 1.6% in midday trading Thursday after the company revealed it would power social media giant Meta’s soon-to-be largest data center facility, lifting retail sentiment. The $10-billion project will be developed on the expansive 1,400-acre Franklin Farm mega site in Richland Parish. Entergy Louisiana plans to build three combined-cycle combustion turbines with a total capacity of 2,260 megawatts (MW), as well as construct new substations and transmission lines. The electric and natural gas provider expects construction of the new generation units alone to create between 1,500 to 1,800 jobs, while substation and transmission investments could generate another 3,500 to 5,000 construction jobs. Once completed, the data center is also expected to provide 44 permanent jobs for the local community. Retail sentiment around the stock flipped to ‘extremely bullish’ (96/100) from ‘extremely bearish’ (7/100) a day ago while chatter remained in the ‘extremely high’ zone. "We're not going to just be powering a facility, we're going to be empowering a community," Entergy CEO Phillip May said in a statement. Both Meta and Entergy have expressed interest in exploring nuclear energy as a future power supply option, alongside renewable sources such as solar and wind, to meet the region's energy needs sustainably in the coming decades. In the short term, the new generators will support 30% hydrogen co-firing, with plans to increase this to 100% hydrogen in the future. Additionally, the companies aim to incorporate carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology. The announcement of a partnership with Meta came after KeyBanc downgraded the stock to ‘Sector Weight’ from ‘Overweight’ on Wednesday, citing valuation concerns. The brokerage sees the stock’s potential on its geographical and regulatory advantages support above-average growth as largely realized. Entergy’s stock has jumped 50% so far this year. Qatar tribune F Willis Johnson As this election cycle draws to a close, I’m experiencing a whirlwind of emotions — hope and worry, resolve and trepidation, clarity and uncertainty. But above all, my abiding faith in the power of our collective voice and the sacredness of our vote fuels me. I’m a member of Generation X, a son of the African diaspora, a husband, a father and a minister. My journey has been shaped by the struggles and triumphs of those who paved the way and the promise of a better tomorrow for those who will follow. From this vantage point, I pen this appeal to you, Generations Next — the millennials and Generation Z. Current events serve as a powerful reminder of the weight and potential of the ballot. It’s not just a piece of paper or a screen tap; it’s a sacred tool for justice, equity and the promise of a more perfect union. For Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC+), the vote was a hard-fought accomplishment, a victory achieved through the sacrifice of blood, sweat and tears. The vote symbolizes the inherent worth of all in a nation that’s often fallen short of its highest aspirations. It’s a thread that connects us to the struggles and triumphs of those who came before us, shaping the narrative of our collective history. For example, the vote honors the suffragettes’ tireless struggle for basic rights in the face of ridicule, arrests and brutality. It was the way to realize women’s reproductive rights and equal pay. The vote remains the most powerful tool to secure their bodily autonomy, yet it is still under threat. The vote is a bulwark against turning back the clock even further. My young siblings, this election isn’t just political — it’s a moment that will reverberate through the annals of history. It’s a moral mandate, a testament to our democracy’s resilience and a defining choice for our nation’s soul. It’s a choice between a country where everyone is valued, every story is respected and every individual can thrive. A path down the dark alleys of division, inequality and despair threatens to extinguish our shared humanity’s essence. A choice resulting from some among us who are prepared to silence the voices of many, drown out the chorus of our collective conscience, revise history, distort the mirror that reflects our past and guides our future, bastardize our republic’s ideals and norms, profaning the sacred principles upon which our great nation was founded; as well as reduce our diversity’s majesty to a monochrome, draining the vibrant colors that make our tapestry so rich and robust. However, we, the people, hold the keys to our destiny. That is why I implore you to exercise this sacred right: Vote. In a democratic republic, your voice is articulated through the ballot. Every election, from the local school board to the presidency, is an opportunity to steer the direction of our communities and nation. Your vote matters. It is an instrument of personal and collective change to hold elected officials accountable and bring about reform. Your vote is representative of your values, the embodiment of your convictions put into action. It is the fulfillment of a moral obligation, a duty to participate in the democratic process that generations have fought to preserve. When you cast your ballot, you are shaping your family, community and country’s future. Do not take this right lightly. Please educate yourself on the issues, the candidates and their platforms. Then, go vote! If you didn’t know, change rests with a single action: casting a ballot. You’ve registered, educated yourself and maybe even mobilized others. There are some obstacles to navigate to ensure every voice is heard. No democracy is simple, easy or clean. However, you are not just a voter; you’re an architect. You are the chief designer of a better nation. You are an author writing the next chapter of the American story. It is a story of hope and resilience, multiethnic and interfaith. We are not waiting for change. Instead, each of us is offered an invitation to create it. I admonish you, young friends, to activate your superpower. If you need guidance or information visit websites like Vote.org and BallotReady that offer tools to check your registration, find your polling place, and research candidates and issues. Also, if you face harassment or intimidation at the polls, report it to the Election Protection Hotline (1-866-OUR-VOTE) or the Department of Justice Voting Rights Hotline (1-800-CALL-FBI). Vote like all our lives depend on it because they do. This plea is not just a simple ask from an “older” sibling; it’s a call to action to take up your role as a responsible citizen and to shape the future you want to see.
