LEBANON — Dartmouth Health and partners across the state are working to address New Hampshire’s shortage of behavioral health care workers — which is especially acute in rural areas — by increasing training opportunities for students. Dartmouth Health is using $1.29 million of congressionally directed spending to help expand training programs for students seeking master’s degrees in behavioral health, like social work and clinical psychiatry. “We are acutely aware of the fact that people experience challenges when they are trying to access mental health care and this is a way that we feel like we can impact that by building the workforce of well-trained providers for the future,” Dr. Julie Frew, vice chair of psychiatry education at Dartmouth Health, said. There are barriers for clinical training for students getting master’s degrees in behavioral health, Frew said. Unlike other types of medical education, behavioral health degree programs do not always connect students with the clinical placements required to earn their degrees. This training can also come with expenses and many providers do not have the capacity to train students. “The onus is kind of on the student to go out and find their clinical rotation,” Frew said. Online programs, which are increasingly popular, are especially unlikely to have connections in the area if they are loccated outside the region. “These students end up having to essentially cold call or cold email people begging them to take them on.” Connecting behavioral health students with providers for clinical rotations, and giving practicing providers the resources they need to successfully host students are the main goals Dartmouth Health wants to begin to address with the $1.29 million in federal funds, Frew said. This project was one of 101 projects totaling $103 million earmarked by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., for fiscal year 2024. Frew, her colleagues in the Dartmouth Health Department of Psychiatry, and an advisory board of statewide stakeholders want to build a website that includes a database of available clinical placements for students and other resources. They plan to include education materials for providers and offer training, workshops and funding opportunities to help defray the costs of in-office education. The team hopes that by making it easier for people studying behavioral health, especially social work and clinical psychiatry, to find training placements across New Hampshire they will stay and work in the state after their education. There were 378 behavioral health workforce vacancies across New Hampshire’s 10 community behavioral health networks (made up of about 40 facilities statewide) in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2023, according to the N.H. Community Behavioral Health Association. Behavioral health care providers, who care for people with mental health and substance use disorders and also provide support with other life stressors and crises, are limited in rural areas statewide, with the lowest number in Sullivan County, according to a 2023 report by the N.H. Department of Health and Human Services. Kate Turcotte, who is the director of the Master of Social Work program at Colby-Sawyer College and a practicing social worker in New London, said she hopes the database will help to address gaps in underserved areas of social work in New Hampshire. Colby-Sawyer is one of the participants in the project’s advisory board. When there are not enough behavioral health providers, patients are left with long wait times or go without care entirely, Turcotte said. The shortage also creates a situation in which social workers can choose where geographically and in which specialization they would like to focus because there is a shortage of available providers; this creates greater gaps in certain areas such as social work focusing on children and on addiction, Turcotte said. Turcotte attributes the workforce shortage to a lack of training opportunities. As a practicing social worker in the region, especially in Sullivan County where she has worked in Claremont and Newport, “the needs are so great and we have a dearth of social workers here,” Turcotte said. Colby-Sawyer began its Masters of Social Work program in 2023. It is one of only three social work programs in the state, with the other two at University of New Hampshire campuses. The program is primarily online with students able to watch recorded lectures and do assignments in their own time, but most of the students are from the area. “We definitely draw from the region and that’s what we want to do,” Turcotte said. At Colby-Sawyer, master’s of social work students are required to complete 900 hours of clinical training in two years. While program staff help students find clinical placements, they do not mandate where students work. Many social workers want to take on students for training because “social workers are givers and there is this real culture of giving back, but it’s tough,” Turcotte said. For providers to take on students, they need to meet several requirements in education, years of practical experience and sometimes specific training in supervising, Turcotte said. This takes time and money and often providers do not earn more money for supervising students, despite the additional work. The barriers, coupled with the limited number of providers, create a “gap” in the opportunities for behavioral health training in New Hampshire. FBI Director Christopher Wray could soon be out of a job. President-elect Donald Trump recently said he will fire Wray after he takes the oath of office next month and replace him with former Justice Department official Kash Patel. During his first presidential term, Trump nominated Wray to be the eighth director of the FBI, calling him “a man of impeccable credentials.” Wray’s 10-year term expires in 2027, which means he would have to either resign or be fired in order to be replaced by Patel, who must still win Senate confirmation. Patel, a Trump loyalist, is a longtime critic of the bureau and has called for shutting down its Washington headquarters and then reopening it as a “museum of the deep state.” Although Wray has been FBI director in Washington for the past seven years, he continues to have deep Atlanta ties. Here are five things you need to know about him. 1. An Atlanta lawyer: Wray, 57, moved to Atlanta in 1993 to join King & Spalding, one of the city’s top law firms. He left King & Spalding in 1997 to become a federal prosecutor at the U.S. Attorney’s Office here. He tried a number of high-profile cases. Among them: He helped secure a guilty plea to a mail fraud charge from Pat Jarvis, once a popular Atlanta Braves pitcher who later served as DeKalb County sheriff. He obtained corruption convictions against the city of Atlanta’s former chief investment officer and a politically connected businessman. And he was instrumental in the prosecution of a man convicted of setting church fires, one of which killed a Georgia firefighter. 2. Wray goes to Washington: Wray was recruited to join the U.S. Department of Justice in 2001 by Larry Thompson, a former King & Spalding colleague serving as deputy attorney general. After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Wray worked closely with Thompson coordinating anti-terrorism and counterespionage efforts. “Chris was very deliberate, made sound decisions, had good judgment and never got panicked,” Thompson said in a 2018 interview. “I relied upon him a great deal.” In 2003, President George W. Bush nominated Wray to be assistant attorney general. He won unanimous Senate approval to head the department’s criminal division and became the youngest person to hold that position since the Kennedy administration. “At the age of 36, Mr. Wray has accomplished more in the legal profession than many of us as attorneys do in a lifetime,” then-Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., said at Wray’s confirmation hearing. While heading the criminal division, Wray oversaw the prosecutions of terrorism cases as well as several high-profile corporate fraud cases, such as the Enron scandal. He returned to King & Spalding in 2005 in Atlanta and worked there as a partner until being tapped to head the FBI. 3. An independent streak: On a number of occasions, Wray pushed back against Trump. When Trump tweeted in December 2017 that the FBI’s reputation was in “tatters” and was the worst in its history, Wray told the House Judiciary Committee a few days later that the bureau he saw had “tens of thousands of brave men and women who are working as hard as they can to keep people they will never know safe from harm.” After being confirmed by the Senate with a 92-5 vote , Wray held an invitation-only, swearing-in ceremony in Washington. Among Wray’s invitees: Sally Yates, his former colleague at the U.S. Attorney’s Office here and whom Trump had fired as acting U.S. attorney general when she refused to defend the administration’s travel ban. 4. Personal: Wray was born and grew up in Manhattan. He attended Phillips Academy, a prestigious preparatory school in Andover, Mass., where he played in rock bands and was a member of the wrestling and rowing teams. He then graduated cum laude from Yale University with a degree in philosophy. During his freshman year, he met fellow student Helen Howell, an Atlantan who graduated from Westminster Schools and whose great-grandfather, Clark Howell, once owned The Atlanta Constitution. They were married at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Buckhead before Wray returned to Yale to get his law degree. They have two children. After Yale law school, Wray clerked for conservative jurist J. Michael Luttig on the federal appeals court in Richmond. Since retiring from the bench, Luttig has strongly criticized Trump and he even endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. 5. Has not seen eye to eye with Trump on several occasions. Just months into his tenure as FBI director, Wray found himself at loggerheads with Trump . In January 2018, Wray went public with a request that the White House block the release of a classified House GOP memo that alleged abuses by the FBI in the Russian election interference investigation. In a statement, the FBI said it had “grave concerns” about the memo’s accuracy. Even so, Trump declassified the memo and it was soon released by House Republicans, enraging Democrats and alarming national security officials. This past Sunday, Trump posted on Truth Social that those convicted of the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol were “J-6 hostages” and victims of “an abuse and miscarriage of justice.” Patel, Wray’s possible successor, has called the Jan. 6 attack part of a “free speech movement.” But Wray condemned it during testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee in 2021, calling the riot “domestic terrorism.” During his Senate confirmation hearing, Wray was asked what would he do if the president asked him to do something that was illegal or unethical. “First, I would try to talk him out of it,” Wray answered. “If that failed, I would resign. NEWARK, New Jersey (WABC) -- A high school in Newark's South Ward is experiencing a remarkable string of recent achievements, both in the classroom and on the football field. On Wednesday the Malcolm X Shabazz Bulldogs will take to the field to compete for the first time ever for a state championship. The game will feature Rumson-Fair Haven and Malcolm X Shabazz of Newark. The team has won its last six games on the road, a major milestone. The success comes at the same time as the school's enrollment is surging, its graduation rate increasing - from 58 to 70 percent since 2021 - and more students are heading to college. Some are crediting the school's new principal, Atiba Buckman, and athletic director for the string of successes. Buckman, a Brooklyn native, understands the challenges facing inner-city public schools. "I think a lot of it was people moving from the neighborhood, stereotypes around the southward, things of that nature," Buckman said. Shabazz was once near historic lows with only 170 students and poor attendance, now the student body is near 600 and growing. Every student must take the SAT and dozens of students scored over 1000. "I like the environment, and I like the way the teachers push me to do my best," Senior Jazmine Washington said. Jazmine received extra support, took classes on Sunday and scored a 1310 on her SAT. Jazmine wants to attend Princeton. Shabazz has become a school that stresses a whole family approach. "We know everyone by name, staff members really do take kids home, they really do, because they're here until 6, 7 in the evening. The building is open 7 days a week," Buckman said. Public schools in inner cities have lost students because of the growth of charter schools and private schools recruiting the best athletes. Now those students are returning home. Zaiden McDonald plays cornerback on the football team, with his work in class and on the field, he is looking at schools like Stanford and Ohio State. "I'm taking AP lit, all these kids see that and they're very inspired and motivated and we also try to lead the school as well," McDonald said. Omari Gaines, on the football team, is going to Stanford in the fall. "My parents are always just always preach student first, athlete second so it really wasn't hard to transition into high school," Gaines said. The coaches take the responsibility of helping young people become productive in life, not just on the field. "I will sacrifice wins in order for my players to understand the importance of academics," Shabazz football coach, Naz Oliver said. Despite Brent oil trading in line with our long-term forecast, WDS' share price implies a near cycle-low oil price level.
