Chelin Lea Nabong, acting branch head of the SSS in Baliwag, said 125 employees were in danger of losing their contributions due to the failure of their employers to settle the collections on Nov. 19. She said these workers hold different positions at the three private schools, a furniture company, a restaurant, a “carinderia” (eatery), rice store, a manpower company and a beauty wellness center located in Baliwag and the town of Bustos. Nabong, in an interview during the serving of the RACE orders last Tuesday, said the contributions that were not remitted reached P3.2 million covering the periods from January to September this year. According to Nabong, their branch has so far served 13 RACE orders this year, for the benefit of 1,245 employees from 101 companies. These companies, she said, also included those that operate but have yet to register their employees with SSS. Faith Henriet Arao, lawyer III in SSS Central Luzon Legal Department who took part in operation on Nov. 19, said the companies served with RACE were those that still failed to remit their employees’ SSS contributions despite an earlier advice. In an interview on Monday, Gloria Corazon Andrada, SSS vice president for Central Luzon 2 Division, said the SSS monitors the accounts of the employers and immediately detects who are noncompliant. But other than this, she said, the affected employees can also make direct notifications and complaints to their office. “We also have cases where contributions were made but were only partial. We also serve them RACE order for failure to remit the next sets of the contributions they promised to settle,” added Andrada, who was also involved in serving of RACE orders on Nov. 19. According to Andrada, employers that will still fail to comply after a third notice will already result in the filing of cases against them. The complex, which next year will lose the headquarters of owner General Motors Co., is the symbol of Detroit, with aerial views often shown on television sports broadcasts. GM decided last spring to leave what's locally known as the “RenCen” for a more modern building being constructed downtown. GM said in April it would join forces with the Bedrock real estate development firm and Wayne County to turn the partially vacant property into a roughly 27-acre entertainment complex across the Detroit River from Windsor, Ontario. Under the plans, Bedrock would invest at least $1 billion in the property, with roughly $250 million more coming from GM and another $250 million in yet-to-be-allocated public money, possibly from the state of Michigan. The plan, called conceptual by Bedrock, would preserve most of the skyline and reduce the center's office footprint. Demolishing the two 39-story towers would free land for the waterfront project that would complement a walkway along the river, Bedrock said in a press release. A pedestrian promenade would link the heart of downtown to the riverfront, Bedrock said. The 73-story main tower would remain, with high-end housing on the upper floors, according to Crain's Detroit Business, which first reported the plans. GM CEO Mary Barra said last April that the move to a brand new state-of-the-art office building in the heart of the city will help GM recruit talent in the future. Special Counsel Jack Smith on Monday moved to dismiss the federal cases against US President-elect Donald Trump -- including one for election subversion -- citing an official policy of not prosecuting a sitting president. Trump, 78, was accused of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election he lost to Joe Biden and mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House, but neither case ever came to trial. Smith, in a filing with the district judge in Washington presiding over the election case, said it should be dropped in light of the long-standing Justice Department policy of not indicting or prosecuting a sitting president. He cited the same reasoning in withdrawing his appeal of a ruling by a district judge, a Trump appointee, who dismissed the classified documents case earlier this year. Smith asked District Judge Tanya Chutkan to dismiss the election interference case "without prejudice" -- leaving open the possibility it could be revived after Trump leaves office four years from now. The special counsel paused the election interference case this month after Trump defeated Vice President Kamala Harris in the November 5 presidential election. "The Government's position on the merits of the defendant's prosecution has not changed," Smith said in the filing with Chutkan. "But the circumstances have." "It has long been the position of the Department of Justice that the United States Constitution forbids the federal indictment and subsequent criminal prosecution of a sitting President," Smith said. "As a result this prosecution must be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated." Some will point to European television stations broadcasting live from Vail for two weeks straight during the 1989 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, while others attribute the resort’s renown to Jerry Ford skiing the slopes of Vail while he was president of the United States. But long before any of that happened, Vail was receiving national attention for its association with ski racing, as newspapers across the country ran stories about the U.S. Ski Team’s first Olympic training camp. Indeed, Vail Mountain had branded itself as a ski racing haven before it had even branded its name. In 1962, before the resort opened for business, the Rocky Mountain News was referring to it as “the new Vail Pass ski area” and reporters from the national news wires — Associated Press and United Press International — were writing stories about how an Olympic ski racing camp was set to be held there. In October 1962, papers in more than a dozen states ran stories describing how the U.S. Ski Team’s new coach, Bob Beattie, was recruiting 40 men and women to “report to Beattie’s ski camp at the new Vail Pass area on Colorado’s Western Slope” to train in December. “We feel Vail will be a terrific training area,” Beattie said. The Los Angeles Times, in November 1962, ran a story about how it could be a pivotal year for ski racing, saying “this year for the first time the USSA is holding an Alpine training camp at Vail, a new ski area West of Denver.” The Rocky Mountain News described the 1962 camp as “a unique experiment in getting an American Alpine ski team ready for an all-out bid in the 1964 Winter Games,” saying the camp “will bring Colorado skiing nationwide prestige.” Former United States Ski Association CEO Bill Marolt was on the 1962-63 U.S. Ski Team, and when the U.S. Ski Team was named from Vail during the mountain’s 50th anniversary season of 2012-13, Marolt gave a speech harkening back to those days. “The reason Vail has such tremendous racing heritage and history is because of the guys that founded it,” he said. “Peter Seibert, Morrie Sheppard and all those guys that came here in the early days and believed in ski racing and believed that ski racing could make a difference in a resort.” Seibert and Sheppard were friends who worked together on Aspen’s ski patrol in 1947 following World War II. Sheppard had served in the Air Force as a pilot and Seibert was a member of the 10th Mountain Division, the famed “ski troopers” who are credited with developing much of the ski industry in the U.S. after the war. Seibert linked up with another World War II veteran and Aspen ski patroller, Earl Eaton, an Eagle County native who, in 1957, guided Seibert to the site that would become Vail Mountain, or “the new Vail Pass ski area,” as it was being called in 1962. When that 1962 training camp took place starting on Dec. 22, there was another military connection worth mentioning, the fact that 33 enlisted men from the 5th Infantry Division at Ft. Carson volunteered to help get the camp off the ground. “These men, under the direction of Col. Robert Potter, will be invaluable in packing the courses and in giving Beattie the manpower he needs to run the operation,” the Rocky Mountain News reported. The stories from the training camp might have reminded Seibert a bit of “Camp Hell,” the 10th Mountain Division soldiers’ nickname for their winter warfare training grounds at nearby Camp Hale. The American ski racers completed approximately 32 downhill miles per day of downhill training at the training camp. “To harden his men and women, Beattie made them stay in the cramped crouch position for 10 minutes at a time,” Curtis W. Casewit with the Rocky Mountain News. “I got them on the hill at 8 a.m.,” Beattie said. “They had to make run after run until 5 pm. We call this a ‘leg-burning’ session. After a week, the racer’s legs are burned into top physical condition.” Casewit said Beattie’s camp was meant to break his athletes of the reputation they had among the European ski racers, who felt the Americans were soft. “Beattie took his racers to an almost snowless piste, letting them barrel across rocks until their edges gave off sparks,” Casewit reported. “Then, after it had finally snowed, the team went skiing in a 30-degree below zero temperature.” “There was such a blasting cold wind that our lungs burned with cold,” Casewit quoted one racer as saying. Ski racer Lem Aitkens “spilled so hard he cracked his crash helmet, with his eyes crossing and uncrossing like a tilt on a pin-ball machine,” the Rocky Mountain News reported in a different story by sports writer Bob Collins. “It’s tough skiing and almost frightening,” Collins continued. “But it’s what these skiers must learn to conquer if they are to win in the Olympics and in future world championships. (The U.S. Team coaches) talk with one voice when they agree that this camp is the ‘greatest thing ever to happen in American skiing.'” When the team arrived at the 1964 Olympics in Austria, they again witnessed horrors akin to a battlefield. Australian racer Ross Milne, in an attempt to avoid people who were stopped on the downhill course during his run, crashed into a stump and died. U.S. racer Gordi Eaton had a bad fall, as well, suffering a head injury. But when the event was over, the U.S. Team had made history by earning its first men’s Olympic ski racing medals, with Billy Kidd taking silver and Jimmie Heuga taking bronze in the slalom. Women’s U.S. Team member Jean Saubert also won a pair of medals in the giant slalom and the slalom. Vail’s presence as a premier ski racing venue was solidified with the team’s success, and when the U.S. Ski Team athletes returned to Vail for their December 1964 training camp (more on that in next week’s Time Machine, our “this week in local history” column, publishing on Monday,) Vail had already secured one of the world’s biggest ski races, an event known as the American Internationals, for March of ’65. The American Internationals was a precursor to the World Cup, which began in the 1966-67 season. On March 19, 1967, Vail hosted a World Cup giant slalom race during the International Ski Federation’s first official World Cup season. Dozens of World Cup events and three World Championships would take place in Vail in the decades to come. This weekend and next weekend, fans look forward to honoring Vail’s ski racing tradition once again with the Birds of Prey World Cup races in Beaver Creek.

Cooper Rush probably will need three more victories in a row filling in for the injured Dak Prescott for any postseason talk to be realistic. The thing is, the Cowboys (4-7) could be favored in two of those games, and already are by four points as an annual Thanksgiving Day host against the New York Giants (2-9) on Thursday, according to BetMGM. Not to mention the losing record at the moment for each of the next four opponents for the defending NFC East champions, playoff qualifiers each of the past three seasons. The Cowboys have a chance to make something of the improbable and chaotic 34-26 win at Washington that ended a five-game losing streak. “Behind the eight ball,” Micah Parsons said, the star pass rusher acknowledging the reality that Dallas hadn’t done much yet. “Let’s see how we can handle adversity and see if we can make a playoff run. But we got a long way to go.” It was a start, though, powered in part by the best 55 minutes from the Dallas defense since the opener, when the Cowboys dismantled Cleveland and looked the part of a Super Bowl contender. The last five minutes for the Dallas defense against the Commanders looked a lot like most of the nine games after that 33-17 victory over the Browns. Which is to say not very good. Jayden Daniels easily drove Washington 69 yards to a touchdown before throwing an 86-yard scoring pass in the final seconds to Terry McLaurin, who weaved through five defenders when a tackle might have ended the game. The Cowboys kept a 27-26 lead thanks to Austin Seibert’s second missed extra point, and withstood another blunder when Juanyeh Thomas returned an onside kick recovery for a TD rather than slide and leave one kneel-down from Rush to end the game. Dallas will have to remember it did hold a dynamic rookie quarterback’s offense to 251 yards before the madness of the ending in the Cowboys’ biggest upset victory since 2010 at the New York Giants. That one was too late to save the season. This one might not be. “We needed it,” embattled coach Mike McCarthy said. “It’s been frustrating, no doubt. We’ve acknowledged that. We’ve got another one right around the corner here, so we have to get some wins and get some momentum.” What’s working Rush ended a personal three-game losing streak with his best showing since the previous time he won as the replacement for Prescott, who is out for the season after surgery for a torn hamstring. The 117.6 passer rating was Rush’s best as a starter, and the NFL’s second-worst rushing attack played a solid complementary role with Rico Dowdle gaining 86 yards on 19 carries. What needs help KaVontae Turpin’s electrifying 99-yard kickoff return did more than lift the Cowboys when it appeared an 11-point lead might get away in the final five minutes. It eased the worst day of special teams for Dallas since John Fassel took over that phase four years ago. Josh Reynolds spoke for the first time about being shot twice in the early morning hours of Oct. 18. He joined the Jaguars this week after the Broncos waived him, and on Friday, the wide receiver seemed eager to move forward from the shooting and in his career. “It’s one of those things I’d rather put behind me ,” Reynolds said of the shooting, via Michael DiRocco of ESPN. “But anybody going through that, man, it’s a crazy ordeal. “But I’m here now. I’m in sunny Florida. I’m just blessed to be here.” Reynolds, 29, was wounded in the left arm and back of his head with non-life-threatening injuries in a drive-by shooting after he left a strip club. He was treated and released from an Denver-area hospital hours after the shooting. “Was tough for a few weeks, but I had a good support system behind me,” Reynolds said. “A lot of the organization over there was helping me out a lot, so they made it easier for me to kind of transition through that whole process.” Reynolds was on injured reserve at the time of the shooting with a finger injury that required surgery. The team designated him to return from injured reserve Nov. 13 and waived him Tuesday rather than placing him back onto the active roster. Reynolds had 12 catches for 183 yards and a touchdown in five games with the Broncos.
