Kunle Ajibade wins the DAME Honorary Fellowship Award, writes UZOR MAXIM UZOATU Even in the darkest of days and nights in Nigeria, there are adorable persons to celebrate in fine fettle. Kunle Ajibade, the Executive Editor/Director of PMNEWS and TheNEWS Magazine, Mr Kunle Ajibade, belongs to that class of excellence. Kunle was on Saturday, November 30, 2024 deservedly presented with the DAME Honorary Fellowship Award by the Lanre Idowu-powered Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME) in Lagos. True to his ever rendering nature, Kunle dedicated the esteemed award to two greatly mourned Nigerian patriots – Dr Stanley Macebuh and Prof Tejumola Olaniyan. In the words of Kunle Ajibade on the award night, “There are two people whose fond memories I would like to honour with this award: Dr Stanley Macebuh who died 14 years ago and Professor Tejumola Olaniyan who died exactly five years ago today. Both of them were amazing spirits of enlightenment.” Even as I served as a judge in different categories of the 2024 DAME awards, I never knew anything about the honour to be bestowed on Kunle. The award to Kunle came to me as a pleasant surprise, and I cannot but report it as news of the worthiest echelon. Kunle was that one dogged public intellectual General Sani Abacha could not kill in his murderous reign over a benighted Nigeria. Abacha charged Kunle with treason, and our very dear self-effacing guru of the word had to spend time in General Sani Abacha’s gulag for his courageous efforts. He was in 1995 jailed for life alongside General Olusegun Obasanjo and others, and Kunle was only released in 1998 after the death of Abacha. Kunle published his prison memoir, Jailed for Life: A Reporter’s Prison Notes, in 2003 and it deservedly won the first Victor Nwankwo Book of the Year Award instituted by the Nigerian Book Fair Trust. To underscore the critical fact that he may have been bloodied but remained fervently unbowed, Kunle published another incisive book on his life and times aptly entitled What a Country! with the requisite exclamation mark. In his as ever combative foreword to What a Country!, the acclaimed poet, essayist and political commentator, Odia Ofeimun, wrote of Kunle Ajibade: “Largely on the strength of his moral comportment as a journalist and because of what I came to know of his love of decency, we grew to be friends. That’s how come, when he and his other colleagues left M.K.O. Abiola’s African Concord magazine in the 90s and began to run THE NEWS and TEMPO – two magazines that had been banned but refused to stay banned – I swore from my London redoubt as an intellectual exile to write for them free of charge. On my return to Lagos, I yielded my place in a more established medium in order to get embroiled in the more indeterminate waters of guerrilla journalism of which they were such intrepid exponents. I later became Chairman of the soon-to-be-rested A.M. NEWS of which he was editorial page editor, the job from which General Sani Abacha’s goons yanked him away before we could evolve a work ethic.” Me too, I had to abandon the about-to-be-birthed daily newspaper which I had been given the start-up capital to found, and I took a pay cut of nearly half of my take-home salary to serve on the selfsame editorial board that Odia wrote of. So I was there live when Kunle was taken away to serve an imprisonment for committing no offence whatsoever, least of all plotting a coup to topple Abacha! It still rankles as one of the saddest memories of my life. Kunle served Abacha’s prison sentence with the redoubtable human rights activist Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, the legendary musician Fela’s brother. Kunle may look soft on the outside, but he takes no prisoners, as his words on then President Obasanjo’s abandonment of Beko Ransome-Kuti are indeed galling. For Kunle, it’s tragic that Obasanjo whom Beko was ready to pay the supreme sacrifice for ended up not bothering about his fellow Abeokuta man when serving eight years as Nigeria’s President. According to Kunle Ajibade, “It was one of the coincidences of history that President Obasanjo, who had not met the victims of the 1995 phantom coup since he had been in power, eventually had a meeting in Abuja with some of them – Col. G. Ajayi, Chris Anyanwu, Ben Charles-Obi, Shehu Sani, etc. – on the very day that Beko Ransome-Kuti died in Lagos: 10 February 2006.” Kunle Ajibade deserves celebration as the DAME award showcased. In a sordid world where darkness is an ever present danger, Kunle Ajibade shines forth with the endearing humanity of his being. He belongs to the frontline, and assuredly so because he does not mince words – where he stands is as clear as daylight. OpenAI, one of the world’s most valuable startups, originally began in 2015 as a nonprofit focused on AI research. But as the cost of achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI)—AI that could surpass human intelligence—soars, the company is shifting gears to attract more funding. On December 26, OpenAI announced in a blog post that it plans to set up a public benefit corporation ( PBC ) for its commercial operations, while keeping its nonprofit arm focused on charitable initiatives. Key changes in structure The proposed transformation will enable OpenAI’s existing for-profit division to function as a Delaware PBC “with ordinary shares of stock.” This shift is designed to attract the substantial investments required for the company’s ambitious projects. “The hundreds of billions of dollars that major companies are now investing into AI development show what it will really take for OpenAI to continue pursuing the mission,” OpenAI’s board explained . They emphasized the need for “conventional equity” to secure funding at this scale. OpenAI’s latest $6.6 billion funding round at a valuation of $157 billion hinged on whether the company could restructure its corporate model to remove a profit cap for investors. The board highlighted the importance of aligning its structure to sustain both its nonprofit goals and the for-profit capital needed to advance AI technologies. The nonprofit arm will retain a significant stake in the PBC, with its valuation determined by independent financial advisors. Liquefied natural gas will be delivered by ship and sent into a newly built pipeline that runs 12 kilometres underground to Kembla Grange, where it will join the Eastern Pipeline. "The terminal, once it's operational, will have a capacity of 500 terrajoules a day, which is enough to nearly supply the whole of NSW's gas demand on a peak day," Squadron Energy's Executive General Manager of Operations Stuart Davis said. All that space includes large areas around giant winches 300 metres apart at either end of the dock, which will hold the 300-metre long tankers in place. Those winches can't have anything built near them as a safety precaution should the massive cables holding the tanker snap. Also, the control room for the whole operation is at least a hundred-metre walk away from the dockside terminal operations across open ground. That's because if something were to go wrong on the waterside, you want the control room a very safe distance away. With the completion of construction, the onshore receiving facility is now undergoing testing to ensure all the equipment is functioning properly. The aim is to be accepting gas deliveries in mid-2026. The next major stage will be the delivery of what is known as the floating storage regasificaiton unit (FSRU), which will be berthed at the terminal. The LNG tankers will pull up alongside that vessel and then pump the gas into it, which will then go into the pipeline. That might seem like an extra step, rather than having the tanker deliver directly into the pipeline. "The reason for the FSRU is that the LNG on board the tankers is at minus 162 degrees Celsius and they don't have the ability to warm that up into natural gas temperatures, which is roughly 10 degrees," Mr Davis said. "So the FSRU is needed to warm up the LNG to make it natural gas." One of the more unusual parts of the terminal operations are two small yellow sheds, which are crucial in injecting odour into the gas. "LNG and natural gas doesn't naturally have any odour," Mr Davis said. "So we add odour at the site to ensure that if there are any leaks, either here through a pipeline or at your home, you're able to detect them." NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told NBC New York in an interview Thursday that investigators have uncovered evidence that Luigi Mangione had prior knowledge UnitedHealthcare was holding its annual investor conference in New York City. Mangione also mentioned the company in a note found in his possession when he was detained by police in Pennsylvania. "We have no indication that he was ever a client of United Healthcare, but he does make mention that it is the fifth largest corporation in America, which would make it the largest healthcare organization in America. So that's possibly why he targeted that company," Kenny said. UnitedHealthcare is in the top 20 largest U.S. companies by market capitalization but is not the fifth largest. It is the largest U.S. health insurer. Mangione remains jailed without bail in Pennsylvania, where he was arrested Monday after being spotted at a McDonald's in the city of Altoona, about 230 miles west of New York City. His lawyer there, Thomas Dickey, said Mangione intends to plead not guilty. Dickey also said he had yet to see evidence decisively linking his client to the crime. Mangione's arrest came five days after the caught-on-camera killing of Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel. Police say the shooter waited outside the hotel, where the health insurer was holding its investor conference, early Dec. 4. He approached Thompson from behind and shot him before fleeing on a bicycle through Central Park. Mangione is fighting attempts to extradite him back to New York so that he can face a murder charge in Thompson's killing. A hearing was scheduled for Dec. 30. The 26-year-old, who police say was found with a " ghost gun " matching shell casings found at the site of the shooting, is charged in Pennsylvania with possession of an unlicensed firearm, forgery and providing false identification to police. Mangione is an Ivy League graduate from a prominent Maryland real estate family. In posts on social media, Mangione wrote about experiencing severe chronic back pain before undergoing a spinal fusion surgery in 2023. Afterward, he posted that the operation was a success and that his pain improved and mobility returned. He urged others to consider the same type of surgery. On Wednesday, police said investigators are looking at his writings about his health problems and his criticism of corporate America and the U.S. health care system. He was 100. “My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” said Chip Carter, the former president’s son. “My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.” A Democrat, he served as president from January 1977 to January 1981 after defeating incumbent Republican President Gerald Ford in the 1976 election. Carter was swept from office four years later in an electoral landslide as voters embraced Republican challenger Ronald Reagan, the former actor and California governor. Carter lived longer after his term in office than any other U.S. president. Along the way, he earned a reputation as a better former president than he was a president — a status he readily acknowledged. His one-term presidency was marked by the highs of the 1978 Camp David accords between Israel and Egypt, bringing some stability to the Middle East. But it was dogged by an economy in recession, persistent unpopularity and the embarrassment of the Iran hostage crisis that consumed his final 444 days in office. In recent years, Carter had experienced several health issues including melanoma that spread to his liver and brain. Carter decided to receive hospice care in February 2023 instead of undergoing additional medical intervention. His wife, Rosalynn Carter, died on Nov. 19, 2023, at age 96. He looked frail when he attended her memorial service and funeral in a wheelchair. Carter left office profoundly unpopular but worked energetically for decades on humanitarian causes. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 in recognition of his "untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development." Carter had been a centrist as governor of Georgia with populist tendencies when he moved into the White House as the 39th president. He was a Washington outsider at a time when America was still reeling from the Watergate scandal that led Republican Richard Nixon to resign as president in 1974 and elevated Ford from vice president. "I'm Jimmy Carter and I'm running for president. I will never lie to you," Carter promised with an ear-to-ear smile. Asked to assess his presidency, Carter said in a 1991 documentary: "The biggest failure we had was a political failure. I never was able to convince the American people that I was a forceful and strong leader." Despite his difficulties in office, Carter had few rivals for accomplishments as a former president. He gained global acclaim as a tireless human rights advocate, a voice for the disenfranchised and a leader in the fight against hunger and poverty, winning the respect that eluded him in the White House. Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts to promote human rights and resolve conflicts around the world, from Ethiopia and Eritrea to Bosnia and Haiti. His Carter Center in Atlanta sent international election-monitoring delegations to polls around the world. A Southern Baptist Sunday school teacher since his teens, Carter brought a strong sense of morality to the presidency, speaking openly about his religious faith. He also sought to take some pomp out of an increasingly imperial presidency - walking, rather than riding in a limousine, in his 1977 inauguration parade. The Middle East was the focus of Carter's foreign policy. The 1979 Egypt-Israel peace treaty, based on the 1978 Camp David accords, ended a state of war between the two neighbors. Carter brought Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin to the Camp David presidential retreat in Maryland for talks. Later, as the accords seemed to be unraveling, Carter saved the day by flying to Cairo and Jerusalem for personal shuttle diplomacy. The treaty provided for Israeli withdrawal from Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and establishment of diplomatic relations. Begin and Sadat each won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1978. By the 1980 election, the overriding issues were double-digit inflation, interest rates that exceeded 20% and soaring gas prices, as well as the Iran hostage crisis that brought humiliation to America. These issues marred Carter's presidency and undermined his chances of winning a second term. On Nov. 4, 1979, revolutionaries devoted to Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini had stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, seized the Americans present and demanded the return of the ousted shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, who was backed by the United States and was being treated in a U.S. hospital. The American public initially rallied behind Carter. But his support faded in April 1980 when a commando raid failed to rescue the hostages, with eight U.S. soldiers killed in an aircraft accident in the Iranian desert. Carter's final ignominy was that Iran held the 52 hostages until minutes after Reagan took his oath of office on Jan. 20, 1981, to replace Carter, then released the planes carrying them to freedom. In another crisis, Carter protested the former Soviet Union's 1979 invasion of Afghanistan by boycotting the 1980 Olympics in Moscow. He also asked the U.S. Senate to defer consideration of a major nuclear arms accord with Moscow. Unswayed, the Soviets remained in Afghanistan for a decade. Carter won narrow Senate approval in 1978 of a treaty to transfer the Panama Canal to the control of Panama despite critics who argued the waterway was vital to American security. He also completed negotiations on full U.S. ties with China. Carter created two new U.S. Cabinet departments — education and energy. Amid high gas prices, he said America's "energy crisis" was "the moral equivalent of war" and urged the country to embrace conservation. "Ours is the most wasteful nation on earth," he told Americans in 1977. In 1979, Carter delivered what became known as his "malaise" speech to the nation, although he never used that word. "After listening to the American people I have been reminded again that all the legislation in the world can't fix what's wrong with America," he said in his televised address. "The threat is nearly invisible in ordinary ways. It is a crisis of confidence. It is a crisis that strikes at the very heart and soul and spirit of our national will. The erosion of our confidence in the future is threatening to destroy the social and the political fabric of America." As president, the strait-laced Carter was embarrassed by the behavior of his hard-drinking younger brother, Billy Carter, who had boasted: "I got a red neck, white socks, and Blue Ribbon beer." 'There you go again' Jimmy Carter withstood a challenge from Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy for the 1980 Democratic presidential nomination but was politically diminished heading into his general election battle against a vigorous Republican adversary. Reagan, the conservative who projected an image of strength, kept Carter off balance during their debates before the November 1980 election. Reagan dismissively told Carter, "There you go again," when the Republican challenger felt the president had misrepresented Reagan's views during one debate. Carter lost the 1980 election to Reagan, who won 44 of the 50 states and amassed an Electoral College landslide. James Earl Carter Jr. was born on Oct. 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, one of four children of a farmer and shopkeeper. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946, served in the nuclear submarine program and left to manage the family peanut farming business. He married his wife, Rosalynn, in 1946, a union he called "the most important thing in my life." They had three sons and a daughter. Carter became a millionaire, a Georgia state legislator and Georgia's governor from 1971 to 1975. He mounted an underdog bid for the 1976 Democratic presidential nomination, and out-hustled his rivals for the right to face Ford in the general election. With Walter Mondale as his vice presidential running mate, Carter was given a boost by a major Ford gaffe during one of their debates. Ford said that "there is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe and there never will be under a Ford administration," despite decades of just such domination. Carter edged Ford in the election, even though Ford actually won more states — 27 to Carter's 23. Not all of Carter's post-presidential work was appreciated. Former President George W. Bush and his father, former President George H.W. Bush, both Republicans, were said to have been displeased by Carter's freelance diplomacy in Iraq and elsewhere. In 2004, Carter called the Iraq war launched in 2003 by the younger Bush one of the most "gross and damaging mistakes our nation ever made." He called George W. Bush's administration "the worst in history" and said Vice President Dick Cheney was "a disaster for our country." In 2019, Carter questioned Republican Donald Trump's legitimacy as president, saying "he was put into office because the Russians interfered on his behalf." Trump responded by calling Carter "a terrible president." Carter also made trips to communist North Korea. A 1994 visit defused a nuclear crisis, as President Kim Il Sung agreed to freeze his nuclear program in exchange for resumed dialog with the United States. That led to a deal in which North Korea, in return for aid, promised not to restart its nuclear reactor or reprocess the plant's spent fuel. But Carter irked Democratic President Bill Clinton's administration by announcing the deal with North Korea's leader without first checking with Washington. In 2010, Carter won the release of an American sentenced to eight years hard labor for illegally entering North Korea. Carter wrote more than two dozen books, ranging from a presidential memoir to a children's book and poetry, as well as works about religious faith and diplomacy. His book "Faith: A Journey for All," was published in 2018.

Pete Carroll, scheduled to begin teaching at USC this spring, has reportedly expressed interest in the Chicago Bears' head coaching job. Likely of no coincidence is that the Seattle Seahawks — the team Carroll coached for 14 seasons — visit the Bears on "Thursday Night Football." The broadcasters are spoon-fed a talking point while noting that the Bears have lost nine games in a row, including all three under interim coach Thomas Brown. A delicious detail is the shared USC history of Carroll and Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. Carroll coached the Trojans from 2001-2009, posting a 97-19 record and winning national championships in 2003 and 2004. Williams was an appendage to new Trojans coach Lincoln Riley, transferring to USC as a sophomore in 2022 and winning the Heisman Trophy. Although 2023 didn't go as well, Williams was the first pick in the NFL draft. Chicago needs an impact coach. Carroll is one, or at least was for a long time, leading the Seahawks to nine consecutive winning records, 10 playoff berths and a Super Bowl title. He is one of four head coaches — Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson and Jim Harbaugh are the others — to have led teams to a college national championship and a Super Bowl appearance. But Carroll is 73 and appeared done when he was nudged out the door by the Seahawks after the 2023 season — although his contract paid him $15 million through this season. In August, he seemed lukewarm, replying to a question about his coaching future on a Seattle radio station by saying, "I could coach tomorrow. I'm physically in the best shape I've been in a long time. I'm ready to do all the activities I'm doing and feeling really good about it. I could, but I'm not desiring it at this point." Yet sitting at home watching 17 weeks of football apparently rekindled the fire. Carroll initiated this story. He wants it known. He's interested in coaching the Bears, according to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter. Carroll declined to comment when reached by The Los Angeles Times. Remember that in his final days in Seattle he repeatedly said he wanted to continue coaching, putting an exclamation point on his intentions shortly after his last game by saying those comments were "true to the bone." NFL head coaches have been skewing younger. If Carroll were hired, he'd be seven years older than the current oldest NFL head coach, Andy Reid, although it bears mention that Reid's Kansas City Chiefs are 15-1 and defending Super Bowl champions. Carroll has always appeared younger than he is, exhibiting boundless energy and enthusiasm in a profession that can jade men. The Bears are one of at least three teams — the New Orleans Saints and New York Jets are the others — that will be shopping for a head coach when the season ends. Chicago fired Matt Eberflus on Nov. 29, one day after a 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions that concluded with perplexing clock mismanagement by the coach and his quarterback. Williams has had a roller-coaster season, mixing brilliant plays with poor decisions. He's been sacked a league-leading 60 times yet hasn't thrown an interception in nine games. Working under Carroll, who developed Russell Wilson even though the pair had their share of differences, could accelerate Williams' improvement. All of a sudden, the USC class Carroll is scheduled to co-teach this spring is in jeopardy. The Marshall School of Business offering is called "The Game Is Life: a new course designed to help students develop their personal game plan for life after graduation, while using their USC education to conquer challenges along the way." It is the latest in a long line of legal troubles for the Netanyahus, highlighted by the PM’s ongoing corruption trial. Mr Netanyahu is charged with fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in a series of cases alleging he exchanged favours with powerful media moguls and wealthy associates. He denies the charges and says he is the victim of a “witch hunt” by overzealous prosecutors, police and the media.
