Project description

NO-OBLIVION “Promoting Universal Jurisdiction while Evoking the Crimes Committed within the Former Yugoslavia” looks back at the conflicts of the former Yugoslavia to, through a victim-centric and jurisprudential lens, preserve the lessons learnt in the aftermath of these conflicts and ultimately safeguard an European legacy of respect for human rights, peace and the rule of law.

To this effect the project will deploy a holistic and intergenerational two-fold approach: by employing a comprehensive awareness-raising campaign directed at younger generations, and further expanded to the general public; and by setting up the groundwork for increasing the knowledge of justice professionals on Universal Jurisdiction and International Criminal Law.

The aims of the project include

  • promoting greater intergenerational awareness of the atrocities committed in the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia,
  • educating on the relevance of protecting democracy and fundamental rights by exploring the lessons learnt from the former Yugoslavia and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia,
  • laying the foundations for enhancing the application of universal jurisdiction and strengthening the knowledge of justice professionals and young graduates in international crimes,
  • ensuring social justice and redress for the victims of the Yugoslavian conflicts and future generations,
  • promoting the rule of law, human rights and fundamental rights towards more democratic societies devoid of extremism and authoritarianism, and
  • capacitating judges, prosecutors, and lawyers to act in an efficient and human-centred manner, especially in the context of international criminal law and universal jurisdiction.

Various event formats such as multi-generational discussions, conferences, virtual exhibitions, livestream film screenings and performing arts performances are intended to reach as many people as possible in the region and beyond and contribute to raising awareness of the conflicts and their consequences. In addition, young university graduates and students from the fields of law, criminology, international relations, history and sociology will also be involved in the project in order to provide new academic contributions to the topic. Finally, information materials are also being developed, including an academic journal, a brochure on case law and a guide infographic for practitioners and academics.

As a partner in the project, Camino organises the multi-generational talks, among other things. In order to promote the exchange of experiences between the generations and preserve the memory of victims and witnesses alike, a live online conference is organised, which is divided into three debates. Participants will be selected in order to preserve the memory of history and also to sensitise younger generations to the experiences of the former Yugoslavia.
